Eva, Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist

A little about Eva.

Eva is an experienced Social Worker whose career with children and families began in 2019. Her first role was within a therapeutic group program supporting mothers and children working towards reunification. The program emphasised trauma-informed care, with Eva using play-based activities to help nurture connection and attachment between mothers and their children.

Before this, Eva completed university placements with the Department of Child Safety and a small rural community organisation. There she supported people navigating practical difficulties, assisting with emergency relief and referrals relating to housing and aged care.

These experiences helped shape Eva's strong sense of social justice and her commitment to ensuring the voices of children, families and the people she works alongside are heard. They also informed the calm, empathetic and playful way she approaches her work today.

Eva's experience.

Supporting children and carers

In 2020, Eva moved into foster and kinship care as a Specialist Placement Worker. She worked alongside carers, offering emotional support and practical strategies as they navigated the needs of children in their care. This included helping carers access appropriate services and making referrals for children’s counselling.

Domestic and family violence support

In 2022, Eva worked within a domestic and family violence service. She provided crisis counselling, offered court support and was an initial point of contact for women referred to the program. She also co-facilitated a psychoeducation program for women following violence, supporting them as they worked towards empowerment and recovery.

Child-Centred Play Therapy

At the end of 2022, Eva felt drawn back to her passion for children and families. After first exploring play therapy during her university years, she began formal play therapy training and joined Kylie Ellison Therapy & Training in December 2022. Since then, she has developed a strong understanding and appreciation of Child-Centred Play Therapy.

Working with parents and educators

Eva recognises how profoundly changes in a child’s environment can affect their world. This understanding, together with her respect for the relationship parents already share with their children, led her to offer Child-Parent Relationship Therapy. She incorporates this perspective in parent consultations, and has also assisted with interstate training and visited kindergartens through the Kindy Uplift program, sharing play therapy knowledge and skills with staff.

How Eva works

Following the child. Honouring their journey.

Eva values evidence-based research and works from a child-centred, child-led, trauma-informed and neuroaffirming perspective. She understands the importance of creating a space where children and young people feel safe to express themselves in their own way. A continuing love of learning has taken her through a wide range of professional development, including introductory Synergetic Play Therapy and Equine Assisted Mental Health training, both of which have deepened her understanding of the nervous system.

“Eva has a calm, empathetic and playful approach, and a deep appreciation for the uniqueness of each child and where they are in their journey.”
For children and families

Play Therapy with Eva.

Eva began providing play therapy at Kylie Ellison Therapy & Training in December 2022, following earlier exposure to play therapy during her university studies. She has developed a strong appreciation for Child-Centred Play Therapy and the importance of allowing children to take the lead within the therapeutic relationship.

Her work is informed by an understanding that children communicate through play, and that their world can change significantly when the environment around them changes. Eva approaches each child with curiosity and respect, recognising that their experiences, relationships and ways of communicating are uniquely their own.

Eva is committed to a child-led, trauma-informed and neuroaffirming approach. She values evidence-based practice and brings a calm, empathetic and playful presence to her sessions, with a focus on hearing the child's voice and meeting them where they are in their journey.

Working alongside parents and carers

Eva also holds a deep respect for the relationships children already have with their parents and carers. Recognising that these relationships are central to a child's world, she chose to undertake Child-Parent Relationship Therapy and continues to bring this knowledge into her consultations with parents.

Her earlier experience with family reunification, foster and kinship care, and domestic and family violence adds depth to her understanding of the many circumstances children and caregivers may be navigating.

Professional support

Supervision with Eva.

Alongside her work with children and families, Eva is excited to offer supervision to fellow play therapists. She welcomes the opportunity to support colleagues on their individual journey of delivering play therapy, bringing the same calm, empathetic and respectful manner that characterises her therapeutic work.

Eva draws on experience across child and family services, foster and kinship care, domestic and family violence support, Child-Centred Play Therapy and work with parents. Her professional learning in Synergetic Play Therapy and Equine Assisted Mental Health has also contributed to her understanding of the nervous system.

She recognises that every practitioner brings their own experience, questions and professional journey. Eva welcomes enquiries from play therapists who feel her background, skills and demeanour may be a good fit for the support they are seeking.
